Hello, I’m Nirupama Viswanath. I’m a picture book illustrator based in Delhi, and I’ve grown up
across different parts of India, from Chennai and Tamil culture to Auroville, Mumbai and now Delhi. I
create vibrant children’s picture books and chapter books filled with colour, play and movement,
and I’m especially drawn to everyday Indian life, expressive characters and the small details that
invite a closer look.I studied architecture, and that background still shapes how I think about space, composition and
the relationship between characters and their surroundings. My path into illustration began during
architecture school and gradually grew from designing wedding invitations into freelance work
across editorial projects, maps, character design and children’s books. One project especially close to
me is Mullai, a Tamil picture book published by Zhagaram Books, where I had the chance to build a
richly detailed forest world. I work digitally in Procreate and Photoshop, and my process usually
starts with research, studies and storyboards before moving into roughs, colour and final artwork.I’ve always been drawn to the ordinary things people might pass by without noticing, and that sense
of observation still fuels my work. Having a toddler has brought that feeling back in a fresh way;
seeing her delight in the smallest things reminds me to slow down and stay curious. Outside of
illustration, I’m trying to read more, spending time in parks and getting increasingly interested in
bird watching. I hope my work gives people that same sense of curiosity and wonder, and makes
them linger long enough to discover one more small thing.
