The “Summer of Reading” Initiative

30th June 2021

The ‘Summer Reading Challenge 2021’ is here!
On the 14th of June the annual ‘Summer of Reading 2021’ challenge launched, coordinated by The Reading Agency. The initiative is built on the premise that reading for pleasure is more important to children’s successes than education or social class (based on a UCL study). Its aims are to use the summer months to instill a long-term love of reading in children and prevent the dip in education that tends to occur over the school holidays. Children can choose to read any books they like, and achieve awards for reaching their reading goals.
This year the initiative has teamed up with the WWF to present the theme ‘Wild World Heroes’, featuring a series of books and activities relating to wilderness and the environment, available online and in local libraries. We hope everyone taking part in the challenge has a wonderful summer of reading!
